Book Description from Back Cover

Okasan and Me is a non-profit corporation for education specially designed for kids. This fun and exciting "high quality" Japanese language and cultural program was created for a "new generation" where "chicken teriyaki" is not the only identifiable association with the Japanese culture.

This book introduces Japanese lnaguage and Japanese American culture through original songs and musical arrangements by Cynthia Konda to children of all ages. Traditional Japanese instruments have been added to the CD recording, such as shakuhachi, shamisen, and taiko. Children will enjoy learning basic vocabulary and pronunciation as well as learning about the Japanese American experience.

Bilingual narration is done on the Okasan & Me CD by Japanese American children. 18 Japanese/English. Each song is written in Hiragana, romanized Japanese, and English. Illustration to promote Japanese/Japanese American culture and enhance learning. Program CD is available to complement this book.

Background on Cynthia Konda and Okasan & Me

Being born and raised in Hawaii, Cynthia Konda is a yonsei, fourth generation of half Japanese decent. She graduated from the University of Hawaii and received a scholarship to Santa Clara University School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 1981. She also attended Tokyo University School of Law and Hong Kong School of Law as an exchange student and worked in both countries.

The founder and Okasan started Okasan and Me for her son Yuki, now 2 years old. She was unable to find a bilingual Japanese/English language program for her son so she started Okasan and Me with a few of her friends.
