Book Description from the Book's Overview Chapter

There are many books that cultivate an understanding and appreciation for the art and beauty of gardens, other that recount the history of gardens and garden design. Still others are "how to" books. This book is different. It tells the story of the struggles and successes of the individuals, mostly Japanese American men, who formed the Professional Gardeners' Federation of Northern California. It tells the story of maintenance gardeners, the caretakers of our yards.

About the Professional Gardeners' Federation of Northern California

The Professional Gardeners' Federation of Northern California (PGFNC) is a collective of gardening associations located in Northern California. Its boundaries stretch from Sonoma County on the north, to Fresno on the south to Sacramento on the east, and to the Pacific Ocean on the west. Today there are five Associations, but at its height, the PGFNC included sixteen Associations.

Although in existence for almost 50 years, the PGFNC had not documented its history until now. The title of our book, Plant, Preserve, Protect, was chosen because it is the motto of the Professional Gardeners' Federation of Northern California. The motto was created at an annual convention to show the PGFNC's ideals and its strong commitment to the state gardening industry.
