Editor's Message

Hello AACP Newsletter Readers.

Hope you’re all having a good spring.

Since the end of the month is fast approaching, I’ll get right to telling you about this newsletter.

For our first article, Raise Our Voices, one of our high school volunteers has written some of her observations and thoughts on what it’s like to be an Asian person living in America.

For our second piece we have some notes taken from a session at the California Council for the Social Studies Conference presented by former AACP associate board member Katie Quan. Have a look at these notes from her session titled Roots of Resistance: Advancing Ethnic Studies Pedagogy in K-12 Classrooms.

For our book selection, we have six books for National Poetry Month which is April - including a new poetry book from a local Bay Area poet and friend of the organization, Lauren Ng, called The Way We Tell It. The book will be released at the end of April.

Fans of poet Marilyn Chin will be happy to know that she has a new book called Sage coming out this May.

Two of our featured books are by authors who will be giving keynote presentations at the upcoming Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) Conference in Oakland. These book are Lenses of Humanity: How Reflection, Connection, and Empathy Can Heal Our World by Kyle A. Reyes and Democracy in Immigrant America by Karthick Ramakrishnan.

Immigration expert Bill Ong Hing’s most recent book called Humanizing Immigration: How to Transform Our Racist and Unjust System is now out in paperback.

One book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century is not a new book, but seems to be garnering some interest among our customers. The one featured in our newsletter this month is a graphic novel version. You can also get the original edition by clicking on this link.

Among our featured children’s books is one by Jane Park who has done several book signings for us in the past. Her new book is called Outside Mom, Inside Mom.

Another featured children’s book, Clear and Bright: A Ching Ming Festival Story, is about the Chinese Ching Ming festival which is coming up in less than a week.

We are featuring a book called Navya Sings for Navarathri this month. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a copy of this book. Since I did not realize that Navarathri is actually observed multiple times of the year, I did a simple Google search and thought it was happening right now (March 30 to April 7, 2025). Anyway, please check this book out too.

You can check out all of our featured books by clicking on the following link.

Hope to see you all at the APAHE conference or one of the other events coming up.

Raise Our Voices

By Cassandra

“On this land, every storm we suffer is a cry across the ocean, the sound of Asian Americans’ desire to be understood.” These lines from my poem “Under One Sky” reflect the Asian American struggle and longing for understanding. I am a high school girl who didn't grow up in the U.S., but in another country, and arrived at age 15 to attend school here. The more I have witnessed and experienced in the U.S. from an outsider’s perspective, the deeper my understanding has grown. Three years of life here have reshaped my view of the world—of good and bad, ideals and reality, success and failure—and have given me insights into the Asian American experience.
