Hello AACP Blog readers.

You can now read the October newsletter from this page.

Our first article is an interview with Duncan Williams about his Irei project, which helped to find more than 99% of the names of the people incarcerated during the World War II Japanese Interment. If you know or knew anybody that was caught up in the Internment, you owe it to yourself to learn more about this project.

Our second article is a transcription of a presentation that was done for us by musician Simon Tam  (founder of The Slants). This was a fascinating presentation regarding his court battle over the name his group which was deemed offensive by the US Trademark office. If you got the emailed version, I added a photo of Simon Tam to the article.

One of our newsletter readers has alerted me to a documentary called Plague at the Golden Gate which was recently shown at the San Francisco Public Library Main Branch with some of its creators in attendance. Some of you may have already seen it on the PBS show American Experience.

The documentary is an interesting look at how an outbreak of the bubonic plague, in Hawaii and San Francisco over 100 years ago, was made worse by business and political meddling, including from the president of the United States. Fueling their motives and actions were ignorance, greed, racism, and a mistrust of science and the medical heads in charge of fighting the epidemic. Sound familiar?

If you missed the showing at the library and on PBS, you can still catch it online by clicking here.

That's all for now.

Keep safe - get vacinated for COVID and the flu.

Bye.
